I'm looking for: A certain genre? Something specific like characters traveling to another world?

MyAnimeList rank inflation and anime that stood out in their time

MyAnimeList rank inflation and anime that stood out in their time

About a week ago on this post I saw a comment by /u/lordposedyon that made an interesting point:

The sad and bad thing is that if an anime is lets say from 2008 and is an anime which I know I would love but have no knowledge of its existence … List is dominated with recently released anime

I never really considered that. I was curious in two things:

  1. How much rank inflation is there? (Inflation may not be the right term, but you get the right idea)
  2. What are anime that may be undervalued because a 7.0 rating for that year is really like a 7.5 today, etc.

Of course, it may really be that anime has just gotten better over time and the ratings map onto reality pretty well. Not entirely sure but just a fun day project I ran in the background while I did stuff.

Ranks over time for anime with >= 100 ratings

Same thing but for >= 1000 ratings

Pretty clear indicator imo things have gone up over time, but it balances out a little the more popular stuff is. Don't really care to run statistical analysis on it.

That being said, what I'm interesting in is what anime may be overlooked because of when they were made? I'm using z-scores just as the easiest way to measure this AKA which anime were positive outliers the most in their year.

Top 10 Outperformers for Their Year

I'll put in bold actually interesting results

Z-Rank Orig Rank Title Year Score Z-Score
1 41 Ashita no Joe 2 1980 8.77 4.20
2 43 Spirited Away 2001 8.77 3.64
3 175 Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho 1992 8.46 3.56
4 10 Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu 1988 9.02 3.48
5 19 Gintama 2006 8.93 3.45
6 2 Sousou no Frieren 2023 9.29 3.43
7 36 Hajime no Ippo 2000 8.78 3.42
8 4 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood 2009 9.10 3.40
9 25 Monster 2004 8.89 3.36
10 5 Steins;Gate 2011 9.07 3.36

Most of the next 10 is gintama so lol

Biggest movers using z-score

Honestly this one is always just anime from the first year you filter by — like if I set the earliest to consider to be 2000, they're all just 2001. Not very interesting imo

Hidden gems?

Arbitrary picking anime that were in the top 500 z-score wise, but were below 500 on MAL rankings. It gave the kind of results I wanted where there's a lot of shows I've never watched but some of them seem somewhat interesting. Some of them are junk though I don't think I want to watch a kids show

Isn't this just going through the top ranking animes and just finding the old ones?

Yeah pretty much

Notable anime that fell off the radar

Notable anime that fell off the radar

Is there any notable and/or good anime you've watched that fell off in terms of exposure. Like an anime series or franchise that had a sizeable following but slipped out of the public eye. First one that comes to mind for me is Yo-kai Watch. It had a decent start and following but it's fall was gradual. FR, the anime's latter half is so maligned by fans. Mostly because the studio behind it was run by low-key morons. It says a lot when you reboot twice in a span of less than a decade. A close second is The Seven Deadly Sins. And in third is either the Shaman King franchise or Tokyo Revengers.

But what are your thoughts? Is there an anime series or franchise that was notable once but has fallen off the radar to you. Say anime from the last 10 years or fewer. Be honest about your choice(s).
