A Detailed Summary of Frieren S1, But All The German Names Are Translated Into English

A Detailed Summary of Frieren S1, But All The German Names Are Translated Into English
Hello! As we all know, the second season of Frieren will start in just a week. So I thought it'd be a fun idea to write a basic (yet overly lengthy) summary of the first season and share it with you to bring you up to speed, but to also give you an impression of how it is to watch the show as a native speaker by translating the German names of all characters and places into English. You have not experienced Frieren until you've watched it in the original German, after all. The first mention of each name will be accompanied by its German version. I hope you'll enjoy!
Frieren S1 as Summarized by Urgnu the Gnu
The party around the saintly hero Heaven (Himmel), the sturdy dwarven fighter Iron (Eisen), the light-hearted and alcohol-loving cleric Jovial (Heiter), and the elven mage Freeze (Frieren) returns from having slain the demon king after spending ten years on that quest. That was a short time for the long-lived Freeze, and so are the next 50 years. When she meets up again with her old party, Heaven dies from old age. As Heaven goes to heaven, Freeze realizes she missed the opportunity to spend more time with this man in his short life. As short as it was, it was immensely significant, and every one of its moments was more important to him than her life's moments were to her. She cries and decides to learn more about humans.
Years later, her travels reunite Freeze with Jovial, who has taken care of an orphan called Distant (Fern). Jovial wants Freeze to teach Distant magic and tricks her into doing so by asking her to decipher a tome by the sage Eternal (Ewig) instead to uncover magic that might potentially prolong someone's life, and teach Distant on the side. It turns out that Distant might be quite the magic prodigy and can hide her magic ability well.
Years pass, and Distant grows into a capable magic user. Jovial, however, nears death but remains lighthearted. No magic can save him. Jovial dies, but not without Distant getting some closure with him before his death. Distant, now strong on her own, joins Freeze on her travels. Freeze likes to collect random skills as a hobby, which is something that brought her closer to others – particularly Heaven -, and they therefore also connect her to her past. She does waste a lot of time in her endeavors, though, which Distant does not have, so she hurries her often.
After some more time, Freeze considers following in the footsteps of her old party. So in the woody region of Board (Brett), Freeze visits Iron again. She helps him search for tomes of the legendary mage Flame (Flamme) in the hollow of Full (Voll). They find the tome relatively quickly, aided by the fact that Freeze knew Flame personally and used to be her student. And Flame knew that at some point, Freeze might come back. The tome gives Freeze a way to talk to dead souls, and Iron wants Freeze to use that knowledge to talk to Heaven in heaven. Now her journey has a destination: End (Ende), the castle of the demon king, where the party's journey ended all those years ago.
They travel through the Lock (Riegel) Gorge, where a magic tome Freeze wants is safeguarded by a dragon. The dragon turns out to be resistant to magic, so they set out to recruit Iron's apprentice who is living nearby, a boy Distant's age named Strong (Stark). Strong once prevented the dragon from attacking the village by staring him down. But he was just too afraid to move and hasn't fought against any dragon before, so through his cowardice it appears that Strong is a weakling. But it soon turns out that Strong is actually strong.
He might be a coward, but so was Iron. Fear is not something that makes a warrior weak, but something that keeps them alive to grow stronger. While he thinks he just has to distract the dragon, Strong single-handedly defeats the dragon in a fight no words would do justice. He then joins the party and Freeze's silly journey.
After clearing a rock slide on the country road Narrow (Eng), the group enters a city about to celebrate a victory of the old hero's party eighty years ago, letting Freeze reminisce about all the statues Heaven left behind – both for the public and for Freeze. But they come across a group of demons in human form sent as messengers of peace into the town, accompanied by the local count Garnet (Granat). The leader of the demons, Liar (Lügner), doesn't seem to be aggressive, but it remains ambiguous whether he is actually telling the truth. Freeze suspects him to be a liar, though, and trying to attack him, she is imprisoned for the time being.
Freeze has already learned that demons just use language as a tool to manipulate humans and prey on them. As count Garnet tries to kill Liar for the death of his son against the forces of Liar's mistress Aura, Liar claims he has lost his father in the same manner to appease Garnet. Shockingly though, Liar lied about this.
One of Liar's underlings, Wire (Draht), slips away trying to kill Freeze. Wire uses his wire powers to incapacitate Freeze, but Freeze easily protects herself from Wire's wire and kills him. She then escapes her imprisonment.
Afterwards, Distant and Strong move to take out the remaining two demons, while Freeze goes after their leader. Count Garnet has been captured after confronting Liar once more, so Strong frees him while Distant evades detection by the demons to ambush them. Using his blood powers to trace her, Liar ambushes Distant in return, while his other underling, Line (Linie), fights against Strong. Line can perfectly imitate the lines of movement of people she has observed, so Strong is forced to fight against Iron's techniques. But she is lacking Iron's strength, so Strong can take her attack and use the opening to slay her. And while Liar has more magic power and control than Distant, Distant is faster and can wear Liar down. Line's death also breaks his focus, and Distant destroys him.
Freeze met Flame when she was very young, and how demons deceive humans with words, Freeze learned to deceive demons by concealing her magic energy. So when Aura aims to deplete Freeze's apparently little magical energy with fighting before using her magic artifact that measures up her magic energy to another being and lets the stronger one control the other, Aura is confident that her training her magic strength for 500 years easily overpowers Freeze's. But Freeze reveals that her magic energy amassed and repressed in her thousand-year-long life exceeds even the wildest imaginations. Having won the aura farming matchup, Freeze then proceeds to farm Aura.
They learn that before being allowed to head further north through the demon-infested lands, they do need to be accompanied by a first-class mage. Freeze cannot provide this certification at this point, never having bothered to keep up with the institutions that changed throughout her long life. To acquire this certification, they are aiming to reach the outmost city of Outmost (Äußerst) after passing over the difficult mountain range of Difficult (Schwer).
But even before reaching that mountain range, the group gets lost in a snowstorm in the region of Cover (Decke), being under a cover of snow now. They need to take shelter in a small hut, where a bare-chested and powerful elf monk named Power (Kraft) is doing exercises to keep warm. They spend the winter together in that snowstorm. Power is apparently much older than Freeze, but also much more optimistic, and has gained faith in the goddess as he got older.
After yet another difficult travel through the cold of the mountain range Difficult, the group reaches the Blade Village (Klingendorf), where the hero Heaven once acquired the hero's blade, pulling it out of a rock and thus proving to be the fated hero. Which never happened, however. The blade is still lodged in the rock and attracts monsters Freeze and her party need to fend off. Instead, Heaven took his fate into his own hand when he went to defeat the demon king.
As Strong's birthday nears, Distant considers giving him a present to show her appreciation. After finding him, following a trail of people he helped being the good boy he is, Distant asks him what he wants. He doesn't know, though, never having received any birthday present, never having felt appreciated. Unlike his brother Pride (Stolz), whom his father and everyone in his village was proud of. But too late he realizes that Pride was actually proud of him too, even to the point of convincing him to run away in the face of danger, costing Pride his life. And Iron has always been proud of him too. It turns out he had everyone's appreciation all along.
When Strong gets poisoned, they visit the local cleric in a nearby village. The man, Be (Sein), heals Strong easily. He turns out to be relatively similar to Jovial, in that he enjoys some of the more basic pleasures in life, like drinking, smoking, and gambling. He is simply living in the moment. More than that though, not unlike Freeze, he seems to be frozen in the past, mourning the opportunity to become an adventurer with his old friend Gorilla, who left to become an adventurer without him ten years ago only to never return. With a push from the party and his brother, Be gets convinced to not let this current opportunity slip up again and joins the party with the goal of finding Gorilla again.
Arriving in Preceding (Vorig), the town preceding Outmost, the group is held up by some people taking an interest in Strong. The local ruler, the highly decorated count Medal (Orden), has recently lost his son Becomes (Wird), but to hold up morale, he wants to keep his death a secret. So Strong, who bears a strong resemblance to Becomes, becomes Becomes for a while for some generous payment. The butler, Sir Fork (Gabel), teaches Strong courtly etiquette, like dancing, riding, and how to hold a fork – something not quite to Strong's liking and fitting his character, but still something allowing him to grow. Especially since him playing Medal's son allows him to deal with his own troubled family history, as he sees some similarity to himself in the count's second son, Bravery (Mut). After Strong dances with Distant at a ball, showing the local populace Becomes is alive and well-becoming, he says goodbye to count Medal, forcing the count to eventually accept his son's death and also his own family's demise, but similarly putting the country's future into a more hopeful direction with Bravery being alive.
Travelling along the country road of Tube (Rohr), Be comes across a lead to his old friend Gorilla – a name that is considered weirder than every name heard before, for some reason. He reminisces about his time with Gorilla as the group cleans a statue. The statue is of two heroes who once saved the whole world. It is not of Freeze or Heaven, though; it is of Power and comes from a time before Freeze even remembers, apparently. Be chooses to follow the new lead towards Gorilla and aims to travel north across Open (Offen) to Door (Tür) to open the door to a new opportunity, while the rest of the group needs to travel west to Outmost.
In the cold region of Cool (Kühl), the group approaches Outmost, the biggest magic town in the northern lands. Also en route to Outmost is a young mage. She is about to be attacked by bandits when Power shows up and beats them up and repels them. The mage introduces herself as Evil (Übel). Power hints at the fact that he rather protected the bandits from her, as he found magically dismembered bodies nearby, which must have been Evil's doing. This insinuates that Evil might be evil.
Both Freeze and Distant apply for the exams for first-class mages. Many other participants are introduced while Exact (Genau) lectures the participants on the rules of the exam. Whirl (Wirbel), a younger mage who has years of experience fighting against demons; Think (Denken), an older, experienced, and cunning mage that has achieved his status as the result of violent power struggles; and Evil, who has been disqualified from a previous exam for straight up killing an examiner.
Distant gets into a group with Evil, while Freeze gets into a group with two constantly arguing girls, the childhood friends Avalanche (Lawine) and Jug (Kanne). Jug possesses water magic, and Avalanche controls ice magic, which they show during the first exam to capture a peculiar bird called Silence (Stille). A Silence reacts strongly to sounds and other direct approaches and can fly faster than the speed of sound. They go and freeze the central lake as well as imbue smaller bodies of water with magic, limiting the water sources for any Silence so Freeze can capture one.
They draw the attention of the cunning Think and his group of Judge (Richter) and Run (Laufen), though. Run uses her magic to run very fast and steal the bird, while Judge holds off Jug and Avalanche, and Think fights Freeze – mainly because he wants to test himself against her, knowing what she did 80 years ago. Freeze defeats Think easily, though, and also breaks the barrier surrounding the exam area, letting in the rain and allowing Jug to overwhelm Judge. Subsequently, they take back their Silence.
Distant, Evil, and Country (Land) have captured a Silence of their own in the meantime. They get into a fight with Whirl, Honor (Ehre), and Sharp (Scharf). Distant overpowers Honor head-on. Country fights Sharp, who can turn leaves into sharp blades, with his clone magic. Evil uses her cutting magic against Whirl, but Whirl can use a spiral-like binding to immobilize targets he can fully see. By bluffing, Distant dissuades him from killing Evil, though.
Void of magic, Whirl's group chances upon a Silence, while in a similar position Think's group attacks an already disqualified group in possession of a Silence with the last thing they can use: their fists.
The second exam, held by Scythe (Sense), is for the participants to get to the bottom level of the Tomb of the Fallen King. The difficulty is that the demon Mirror (Spiegel) resides there and will create hostile copies of anyone entering, as the mages will soon find out. It is an exercise in teamwork and introspection. For better or worse, the participants don't cooperate right away, though, ignoring Think's advice. That's how Country and Evil come across Evil's evil clone, forcing Evil to deal with herself herself. There is also a copy of the very powerful Scythe in the dungeon, which, using Scythe's magic to control her hair and cut through opposition like a scythe, defeats and disqualifies the noble Noble (Edel) while her companions Mist (Dunst) and Lead (Blei) try to escape. Lead gets wounded, though, and Mist has to leave him behind, not letting Lead weigh Mist down.
Eventually, multiple groups assemble in front of the final room, which holds the biggest obstacle: a copy of the overly powerful Freeze. They devise a plan to defeat Freeze's copy, helped by the fact that Method (Methode) can analyze Freeze's resistances and weaknesses. Freeze goes to fight her own copy at an equal level, while Distant hides her presence and aims to quickly surprise the copy at an opportune moment.
The remaining mages go to defeat the remaining clones to buy some time. Judge and Avalanche get defeated and disqualified by Scythe's clone, leaving Evil to deal with Scythe. In an exam three years ago, the participants were asked to use offensive spells on Castle (Burg), who had turned himself into a fortress by imbuing his robe with impenetrable defense magic. Evil, however, didn't care what mages thought impossible and cut through it anyway, killing Castle. Magecraft is built on imagination, and Evil's imagination goes beyond that of a good normal human being. Thus, she can also intuitively cut through Scythe's magic hair and defeat the copy. They soon find out that the copies regenerate, though, and are only saved by Freeze and Distant finally defeating Freeze's copy and killing Mirror.
Series is not happy with the results of the second exam. Because of Freeze, too many participants passed the second exam. She decides to hold the third exam herself, judging by intuition whether the participants are worthy of becoming first-class mages. She lets Jug fail because Jug is too impressed by Series' magical energy and can't imagine being a first-class mage, and imagination is essential for mages after all. Mist, Run, Sharp, and Honor also all fail. Despite her power, Freeze also fails because she can't imagine being a first-class mage. That is due to what Series sees as a first-class mage, though, and having met Series while Flame was still alive and also after she passed away, she knows her vision of being a mage doesn't align with Series'. Freeze values Flame's spell to create a flowerfield the highest, because it led her to Heaven, and they all took down the demon lord together, while that spell is of no use to Series.
Distant, however, can see small fluctuations in Series' magical energy. Even the first-class mage Learn (Lernen) hasn't noticed it in Series, and the first-class mage Wrong (Falsch) even wrongfully assumed Freeze wasn't repressing her magical energy. That alone makes Series realize Distant is a very capable mage and offers her an apprenticeship – just shortly after having decided not to take in any more human apprentices because of their short life span. Distant refuses, of course, as she wants to stay with Freeze. Distant passes anyway.
Think also passes, as despite his old age, his youthful spirit considers how to engage in a fight with Series. Evil also passes without any explanation necessary. Country gets scolded because his real body has been leisurely sitting in the countryside all this time, and he only ever sent his clones to the exams, including this one. Series admires his gall, though, and lets him pass. Whirl, being a combat mage using magic as a tool, is quite to Series' liking and passes. Method passes by virtue of calling Series a cute little elf, apparently the objectively correct answer.
Afterwards, they all slowly say their goodbyes to each other. Think now can finally visit his wife's grave in his hometown. Whirl reveals to Freeze that he truly reveres the hero Heaven, for defending and helping everyone, even strangers. And he, too, appreciates the people he meets in his life, for remembering them enriches his life.
The old first-class mage Learn, Series' apprentice, also longs to be remembered, and being a battle mage, he'd even be satisfied with being known as the killer of the legendary mage Freeze and attacks her. Freeze refuses to fight him, though, explaining to him that Series will remember him, just like she fondly remembers Flame and all her other apprentices, and that's enough. Strong also says goodbye to the people of Outmost that he befriended while Freeze and Distant were participating in the exams.
Finally, they quickly see off Jug and Avalanche as their journey continues. So they keep the farewell short, in faith of seeing each other again some day.
Closing Words
And that's where we are right now. If you've made it to here, thanks for reading and I hope I could entertain you a little. I know it was long, but I already cut quite a bit and didn't have it in me to cut even more. Initially, I wrote it as a basic retelling, but that was just way too long and not enjoyable to read. I feel it leans more into a detailed summary now and reads a little better. But shoutout to all the things I had to cut, like not being able to mention chef Tasty (Lecker) or capture the deeper meaning of some more inconsequential scenes better. If you want that, you could just rewatch the show, though, it's worth it for sure.
Otherwise, you should now have refreshed your memory on the events of season one, and also have a better understanding for the usage of German in the show. That was the main idea for this post anyway, to highlight how simple and on the nose the names sometimes can be ("This is Liar. Believe it or not, he's a liar. This is Strong, and get this, he's strong. The party travels to End, which is where her previous journey found its end."), and at the same time how multifaceted some other names can be ("The main character is called Freeze. This could mean she's frozen in time, or maybe she's longing for human warmth. Her mentor was called Flame, and she lit a fire within Freeze and the whole world of magic. Her mentor is called Series, and that could have so many different meanings as well.).
As much as I joke about this sometimes, I deeply appreciate both instances of this naming scheme. Every name has a meaning, and I'm sure translations for new names will be shared quickly in the episode threads. I encourage you to read up on them and always consider what this name means, and you might learn even more about the characters.
