Does anyone else miss when isekai was more about going back home?

Does anyone else miss when isekai was more about going back home?

I’ve realised that one of the things I miss about isekai is how much more importance they seemed to place on the idea of home.

The other world was exciting, but it also felt disruptive. It interrupted a life, created distance, and made the possibility of return feel emotionally important. There was often a real sense that the protagonist was caught between two worlds rather than simply upgrading to a better one.

A lot of newer isekai obviously feel different. The new world is often treated less like a strange place the protagonist has to survive and maybe leave, and more like a better replacement for their old life. The tension shifts away from homesickness, divided loyalty, or the question of return, and more toward settling in, starting over, and leaving the old world behind both physically and emotionally. Not sure what caused this shift, to be honest.

I’m not saying every isekai needs to be about going home, obviously. Some stories are clearly built around staying. I just think the genre often feels more emotionally interesting when “home” is still part of the equation.

I'm looking for: A certain genre? Something specific like characters traveling to another world?

Shows I've already seen that are similar: You can include a link to a list on another site if you have one, e.g. MyAnimeList or AniList.
